I am a proponent of free culture, and NYC has an incredible amount all summer long, particularly live music. Gotta love the live outdoor afternoon/evening shows. Saturday Kieran and I went to Central Park Summerstage and last night my friend Jen and I saw Sun Volt at the summer-long River-to-River Festival. We watched it from North Cove Marina harbor, where my company keeps its boat. In case you don't know, Sun Volt was formed by Jay Farrar after Uncle Tupelo broke up, and his music today still retains heavy Alt-Country overtones. It's a good sound, solid song composition, etc.
I mention this because one of the other members of Uncle Tupelo, Jeff Tweedy, started what I believe to be one of the finest bands in America over the last several years, Wilco. Tweedy and Co. just blow away Sun Volt in every way man. I think Wilco is today's version of The Band. Just love 'em. If you haven't already go out and get Wilco's latest double-live CD Kicking Television. Oh yeah, the Sam Jones documentary I am Trying To Break Your Heart is excellent as well.
